A Helpful Guide from Avanta Yacht Charters

At the conclusion of your yacht charter vacation, it is customary to offer a gratuity to the crew if you feel they have provided excellent service. While gratuities are always discretionary and never mandatory, they are an important and traditional part of the yacht charter industry worldwide.
What Is Standard Yacht Charter Gratuity?
In most crewed yacht charters, the customary gratuity range in 2026 is:
🚩 Caribbean: 15%–20% of the charter fee as suggested on your charter contract
🚩 Mediterranean: 10%-15% of the "Base" charter fee (not including the APA or VAT) as per your charter contract.
The exact amount is entirely at your discretion and typically reflects:
Quality of service
Crew professionalism
Culinary experience
Attitude and attentiveness
Overall enjoyment of your week
Why Charter Crew Gratuities Matter
Unlike cruise ships or resorts where staff rotate among many guests, your yacht crew works exclusively for your private group for the entire charter.
They:
Prepare and serve every meal
Maintain the yacht daily
Adjust itineraries to your preferences
Handle docking, anchoring, water sports, and safety
Provide hospitality from early morning through evening
Crew members often work 17+ hours a day to provide personalized service, including gourmet meals, cabin cleaning, water sports instruction, and navigation.
Gratuities form a meaningful portion of the yacht charter crew's annual income and recognize the personalized nature of the service provided.
How & When to Present Gratuity to Your Crew
Gratuities are typically presented directly to the Captain at disembarkation.
Payment may be made via cash, wire or prepaid. Confirm all options prior to trip.
Some crews accept PayPal, Venmo or Wise.
The Captain distributes gratuity among the crew.
We’re confident that your crew will exceed your expectations. During your stay aboard, you will realize that your crew is more than hardworking, more than just personable, more than professional. Their only additional benefit from the exceptional service they provide is the gratuity you leave. And while it is a lovely gesture, taking the crew out to eat or buying them drinks should not be considered part of the gratuity. Failing to tip would be like dining and dashing – not cool.
Again, it's entirely up to you and your experience. If you choose to tip more than 20%, we are certain the crew will be overjoyed.

Important 🚩
If at any point during your charter something does not meet expectations, we encourage you to notify the Captain immediately — and contact Avanta right away if needed.
Most concerns can be resolved quickly during the charter week, ensuring your experience ends on a high note.
Read your contract: Clause 18 in the Charter Yacht Brokers Association contract and Clause 21 in the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association exists specifically so that any issues onboard can be addressed promptly — often within hours — while solutions are still possible. We are always available during a charter to advocate for our clients, but we can only intervene when we are informed in real time.
We always check in on our clients mid-week during their charter to confirm all is well and everyone is having the vacation they envisioned.
At Avanta Yacht Charters, our goal is to create exceptional charter experiences — and to support the professional crews who make those experiences possible.
The True Luxury of a Crewed Yacht Is

CYBA Accredited Yacht Charter Brokers: Capt. Randy & Shelly Tucker
If you want to experience a luxury yacht charter vacation first hand and up close, there is no better way than on your own privately crewed yacht with a full-time professional Captain and Chef/First Mate. We've been sailing and chartering for well over thirty years.

The U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands were our "backyard" which we came to love and cherish. So much so, that we sold everything in 1997, became a USCG licensed Captain and moved to Charlotte Amalie, USVI as owners & operators aboard the 72' sailing yacht. We do know the ins and outs of this special place & the people who live there.
Never been on a chartered yacht vacation? We will help you personally design your charter yacht vacation in the Caribbean or Mediterranean! Imagine being able to sail into small bays with beautiful white sands & fantastic snorkeling. A yacht vacation is a great way to spend quality time with your friends or family!
Why use a CYBA Accredited Yacht Charter Broker?
How to be Savvy Verifying your Yacht Charter Contract:
Is Your Charter Contract Real or Fake?
As a member of CYBA, the Charter Yacht Broker’s Association, we adhere to strict yacht charter booking protocols. We have access to the CYBA industry escrow account and E-Contract to protect your money. This is made available by CYBA for electronic use only by established, industry recognized and reputable Yacht Charter Brokers with a verifiable contract number at CYBA.net
Charter yacht owners, their hired crews and travel agents do not have access to this account. Check your contract verifcation number at CYBA.net
We have time to answer ALL your questions. If the crew are taking care of guests onboard, they honestly do not have time to answer a lot of questions.
This is what differentiates professional CYBA yacht charter brokers from anyone else trying to book a charter vacation.
Very Important! It is not safe to send your hard-earned money directly to a business or yacht that is not accredited by a professional charter industry association to handle yacht charter client funds. Always ask & verify!
